Instead of a simple pledging system with no challenges for growth after initiation, SigEp develops its members through the continuous Balanced Man Program, which promotes personal development throughout a brother's four years in college.
100 Years of Excellence
The Florida Alpha chapter of Sigma Phi Epsilon began at the University of Florida in 1925 as the 63rd chapter nationally, and the 11th Fraternity at the University. In 100 years, our chapter has grown into one of the most prominent fraternities on campus.
In January of 2016, our Florida Alpha Alumni, SigEp Headquarters, and the University of Florida worked hard to ensure that Florida Alpha would return as a positive force in undergraduate's lives to campus after suspension years prior. A colony was formed with 40 outstanding young men who were recruited to restart the organization and build the chapter to become better than ever. We received our charter January 27th, 2018 after SigEp Headquarters reviewed the progress made by the chapter and the impressive impact the group of men made on campus over the two years since returning. Our chapter house, which has been our home since 1955, underwent a complete renovation to improve the living environment for our brothers in 2017.
In November 2023, our chapter is proud to have won the UF Greeks 2023 Interfraternity Council Chapter of the Year award. This is our seventh consecutive year winning the IFC Chapter of the Year award, the most of any fraternity in university history. This is a testament to the positive force our chapter has sought to become at the University of Florida.
Athletic excellence has been a point of pride for our chapter. Florida Alpha continues to be competitive in fraternity intermural championships, and has won many President Cups. Brothers are part of club and varsity athletics, such as soccer, softball, lacrosse, rugby, and football.
Excellence in the classroom is another strength of the brotherhood, as Florida Alpha has consistently earned the highest GPA of UF IFC fraternities. As of Spring 2024, we have had the highest GPA for 14 of our 17 semesters since returning to campus.
SigEp's prominence on campus has been furthered by brother’s involvement in student organizations. A number of student body presidents hailed from our chapter in the past, while others are currently involved in Student Government, Cicerones, Campus Diplomats, design teams, university research, and a variety of other organizations. Many brothers have been inducted into the UF Hall of Fame.
Our Mission
SigEp is redefining fraternity on college campuses across the country. We complement a man’s education by delivering a premier student experience in one of the most formative times of his life. Through SigEp, men strengthen their character, build leadership and interpersonal skills, and learn to develop healthy, lifelong relationships that are essential to a successful and fulfilling life.
SigEp revolutionized the fraternity movement in 1991 by unveiling the Balanced Man Program (BMP), a concept of single-tiered membership and continuous development that begins the day a brother joins. SigEp believes the stereotypical fraternity experience does not fulfill the needs of today’s college male. The BMP offers an experience focused on scholarship, leadership, professional development and life skills. Members learn to live their best lives through unique, rewarding programming tailored to fit their needs and prepare them for the journey of life ahead.
